Stone Restoration

There are many methods available for repairing and restoring damaged stonework. The most appropriate approach depends on the condition of the stone, the structure it forms part of, and the desired longevity of the repair.

Full Stone Replacement
The ideal method is often a full stone replacement. This involves carefully assessing and measuring the failed stone. Where moulded or decorative stonework is involved, a template is taken to accurately replicate the original profile and detailing.

A suitable replacement stone is then selected, either to closely match the existing material or, where appropriate, a more durable stone may be specified. The new stone is worked in the masonry workshop to precisely match the original template before being installed on site.

Stone Veneer Repairs
Failed walling stone can often be repaired using matching stone veneers. This technique is particularly effective because it avoids the need to dismantle sections of a building or wall. By retaining the original structure, the integrity and character of the historic fabric are preserved while restoring the appearance and performance of the masonry.

Stone Mortar Repairs
Matching stone mortar repairs can be applied to both internal and external stonework, including detailed mouldings and decorative features. To achieve the closest possible match, selected stone dust is used within the repair mortar, creating a matching colour and texture.

Throughout my career as a stonemason, I have maintained detailed records of every mortar repair mix I have developed. This has enabled me to build a comprehensive library of repair formulations for a wide range of stone types.

One particular achievement is the development of a successful repair mix for Ketton Stone, which is widely regarded as a challenging stone to repair. As a freestone, it has no defined bed and is composed of small calcareous particles that have naturally fused together over time. Achieving a durable and visually sympathetic repair requires considerable knowledge, experience, and careful material selection.
