New Build Walling

Your trusted partner in Stone Construction.

New walling stone with flat top and bottom surfaces is known as sawn on bed walling stone. This type of stone is typically produced in four standard course heights. When combined with mortar joints, these set sizes align with the height of standard concrete blockwork, allowing new-build properties to be constructed more efficiently and with greater ease.

The sawn on bed walling stone stocked at Helpston Masonry is sourced from local quarries and stored within the masonry yard for several months to season. This traditional approach allows the stone to naturally cure before use, improving its stability and workability — a practice often lost in modern, fast-paced production methods.

Stone can be finished in a variety of textures, a process known as dressing, which enhances both appearance and character.

There are also multiple styles in which the stone can be laid. A preferred method is blind bedding, where mortar is applied to the back of the stone and the stones are laid on tight beds. The mortar at the face is carefully scraped back, highlighting the natural texture and detail of the dressed stonework for a more refined and authentic finish.
