Stone Conservation

Stone Conservation

Your trusted partner in Stone Construction.

Stone conservation involves using specialist repair methods to stabilise existing materials and prevent further deterioration. This approach can apply to an entire structure, specific parts of a building, or even features within the surrounding landscape.

Preserving the original appearance is essential, as it maintains the authenticity and historical integrity of how the structure was built.

Before beginning my stone masonry apprenticeship, I spent a year working nationwide with an in-house conservation team. During this time, I gained hands-on experience carrying out a wide range of conservation and restoration techniques, including:

  • Repairing stonework and plasterwork
  • Safe removal of lead-based paint
  • Treating and repairing salt-damaged stone
  • Implementing preventative measures against salt damage
  • Resealing stone surfaces
  • Removing stains from masonry
  • Applying various cleaning methods
  • Lime washing

This experience provided a strong foundation in traditional conservation practices, ensuring that all work is carried out with care, precision, and respect for the original craftsmanship.

"Helpston Masonry have carried out three moderate sized jobs for me. It was clear to me from the first job, that Alex Williams, the one who carried out the work for me, was not one to compromise the high standard of work which those skills, which clearly he had been expertly taught, demanded.

From the fundamental foundations of the job, to the choice of stone most suitable for the type of job, the precise colour match of the lime based cement and the precise way he worked, gave me the confidence to entrust him with other small but visually important jobs which he was happy to carry out.

He was always there when he said he would be and worked in a very ordered way, leaving the work place tidy at the end of the day. I understand why Helpston Masonry is a company in demand in this predominantly stone building area and have no hesitation in adding my own acclamation." - N. W. Bainbridge
