From a young age, I have always been fascinated by construction and how structures are formed. My passion for stone began at 15, when I created my first sculpture — a sycamore seed carved from alabaster. This followed a school work placement at Burghley House Sculpture Garden, where I observed the in-house sculptor producing large stone pieces inspired by natural forms, titled Fragments of the Landscape. It was here that I first witnessed the process of shaping stone and understood what could be achieved through skill and craftsmanship.

After completing my secondary education, I went on to study at art college, where I developed my creativity and artistic understanding, graduating with a Distinction in Fine Art.

Following college, I secured a position at E. Bowmans of Stamford, a construction firm established in 1886, specialising in the restoration of historic buildings with all trades in-house. Working within the conservation team, I travelled across the country contributing to restoration projects on significant buildings, including the Carinthian Arch at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire.

It was during this time that I discovered the masonry workshop within the company yard. Seeing skilled craftsmen shaping stone first-hand confirmed that this was the path I wanted to pursue. The following year, I began a three-year stone masonry apprenticeship, completing a block-release banker masonry course at York College. Learning to understand and work stone by hand every day was a defining experience. I was the first apprentice in my group to complete the course and the only one awarded a City & Guilds Silver Medal of Excellence for outstanding achievement.

As my career progressed, the demands of the industry introduced me to modern masonry techniques and power tools, which I was trained in by an experienced Cambridge-based stonemason. This expanded my capabilities and allowed me to work efficiently while maintaining traditional craftsmanship. During my time with E. Bowmans, I travelled extensively, templating, producing, and installing stonework across the country. A notable project included work on the West Front of Peterborough Cathedral. I also developed strong on-site skills, including traditional pointing methods.

Following the closure of the company, I became self-employed, working with limestone quarries around Stamford in Lincolnshire. I later spent two years working in London on a three-storey private chapel project.

In 2017, I made the decision to establish my own business, allowing me to work closer to home and spend more time with my family. Living in the village of Helpston, Cambridgeshire — between Stamford and Peterborough — I founded Helpston Masonry, adopting a local identity to serve the surrounding communities.

Since establishing the business, I have undertaken a wide range of masonry projects, covering all aspects of the trade as demonstrated throughout this website. I have continued to develop my skills, completing additional training such as Advanced Dry Stone Walling, and I remain passionate about learning new techniques and refining my craft.

I take great pride in my work and always strive to perform to the highest possible standard — a commitment that is reflected in the quality of every project I undertake.
