Re-pointing

From the early stages of my stonemasonry training, I was taught the traditional craft of repointing historic buildings using hydraulic lime mortar. This remains one of the most appropriate and effective methods for maintaining both stone and brick structures, particularly those of historic significance.

The most commonly used finish for lime mortar repointing is a traditional dry-brushed finish. This technique compacts and seals the surface of the mortar, improving its durability and helping to extend its lifespan while maintaining an authentic appearance.

When removing failed mortar joints, I use a vacuum extraction system where possible. This significantly reduces dust during the chasing-out process, creating a cleaner working environment and minimising disruption to clients and surrounding areas.

New repointing mortar can be carefully colour-matched to the existing masonry. Wherever possible, I prefer to use locally sourced sands, helping to achieve a natural match with the original work. For wider joints, fine aggregates may be incorporated into the mix to reduce shrinkage and minimise the risk of cracking during curing.

Ashlar & Fine Joint Repointing
For smaller moulded masonry joints, such as those found on fireplaces, architectural stonework, and fine ashlar masonry, a specialist lime putty ashlar mortar is used. This mortar can be colour-matched to the surrounding stone or existing joints through the careful addition of pigments and stone dust, providing a discreet and sympathetic finish.

Patio & Flagstone Repointing
Through my experience developing conservation repair mortars, I have also formulated a highly effective mortar mix for repointing both traditional and modern flagstone patios and steps.

This specialist mortar:

• Provides excellent adhesion to hard-wearing flagstones 
• Remains flexible enough to accommodate natural movement 
• Resists shrinkage and cracking
• Sets sufficiently hard to withstand routine pressure washing and maintenance
• Helps extend the lifespan and appearance of paved surfaces

The result is a durable pointing solution that combines strength with the flexibility required for external paving applications.

Internal Feature Walls
When repointing internal stone feature walls, there is also the option of applying a breathable stone enhancer and sealer. This treatment helps protect the masonry from everyday dirt and dust while making future cleaning and maintenance easier.

In addition, the sealer enhances the natural colours and textures of the stone, bringing out its character and creating a richer, more striking appearance. The result is a feature wall that not only remains breathable but also benefits from improved visual depth and overall presentation.
